Progressive discipline is a formal process for coaching and improving poor performance. Having a progressive discipline policy and procedure in your organization will help employees understand what will happen if expectations are not met. The purpose is to act early before the poor behaviour, attitude or performance becomes a habit. Your employees will feel protected because if they make a mistake, they have the opportunity to correct this behaviour instead of being terminated. The process can improve communication between managers and employees, as well as achieve higher productivity from their employees. When progressive discipline is done correctly, it can save the company a lot of money by reducing legal fees, hiring and training costs, and costs associated with notice pay and/or severance pay.
By the end of this course you will be able to learn what progressive discipline is, the benefits to using progressive discipline for both employee and employer, when to use progressive discipline, the five steps to progressive discipline; coaching, verbal warning, written warning, final written warning with possible suspension and termination and how to reduce the risk of being sued for wrongful termination.
