In this course, we outline how treaties establish mutual rights and obligations for the states involved. We begin with an overview of the Vienna Convention and the four central elements of treaties. We then break down each element involved in making a treaty, and possible difficulties arising from reservations. The binding force and application of these treaties once concluded is discussed. We then turn to bases of invalidity of treaties, with attention given to such factors as mistake of fact, fraud, and bribery. Lastly, we review suspension and termination of treaties: when it is acceptable, and what consequences arise.
