I am a criminal defence lawyer (September 2023 Call) and a former Assistant Crown Attorney with experience in two Ontario jurisdictions: the Central West and Northeast Regions. I previously served with distinction as a Judicial Law Clerk to the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.
My interest in generative AI arises from our shared professional responsibility, as Ontario lawyers, to uphold technical competence. I seek to explore both the ethical dimensions and practical applications of AI-enabled tools within the context of criminal litigation.
I hold a JD with Distinction (2023) from the Lincoln Alexander School of Law, Toronto Metropolitan University. I have a Masters in Communication from the State University of New York-at Albany, where I studied as the recipient of the U.S. Fulbright Fellowship, one of the most prestigious academic scholarships for graduate students internationally.
I am a member of the Criminal Lawyers’ Association, Women in Canadian Criminal Defence, the Ontario Bar Association (OBA), The Advocates’ Society (TSA), and Peel Law Association. Currently, I serve on several Sections’ Executive of the OBA, and I have been re-appointed to the TSA’s Young Advocates’ Standing Committee (YASC). Previously, I served on the OBA Student Section Executive as the Lincoln Alexander Law Ambassador (2022-2023).
During law school, I pursued diverse research and clinical opportunities as well as extra-curricular activities to realize that my interests lie in a broader context, including administrative, aboriginal, labour and employment, human rights, privacy, and criminal law.
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family, travelling, and camping. I also adore all things art. I enjoy meeting new people and making meaningful connections. Feel free to connect with me on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/oksanaromanov/.
